August 9thThe past few weeks have been very busy for members of the MQHYA, with shows all over! In the month of July the Firecracker Circuit was held in Skowhegan, Maine. It was great to see so many maritime faces representing our association so well across the border! Also congrats to the MQHYA members who traveled to Massachusetts for the Region 6 Experience. Last weekend the MQHA held the annual 4-day Summer Sizzler Horse Show. Nearly every stall was filled and the weather was great for the most part. Although the show didn't begin until late into the afternoon on Sunday it made for an interesting show day! It was awesome to see many riders and horses from the United States coming up to show in Sussex for the first time! Congratulations to Anika Hodgeson for once again being the Novice Youth All Around winner, and to Sarah Connors on having the Youth All Around! Also congrats to Kalli Hood and her mare Gay Bar Dee Bar on winning the Showmanship Challenge out of more then 10 entries of all experience and age levels. On Saturday night the Youth all walked to Pizza Delight and had our annual youth dinner which was great, followed by our Youth Games night which of course everyone always participates in. Congratulations to our Sit A Buck winner Martin Doustou who won after a long dual between him and another rider for the win! A new game and probably a future favorite was the Blindfolded wheel barrow races! There wasn't a single person in the arena who wasn't laughing while watching, games that followed included the popular Carrot Trail and Shave the Balloon. Our next and last show of the 2009 Season will be held in September which includes our Mini and Mega Slot, look forward to seeing everyone there!
June 24thLast weekend the MQHA held the first AQHA show of the 2009 season! There was a great turnout and some new faces and horses which is always great to see. Saturday Night John Hughes and our youth held an obstacle course which everyone was nervous to try out first, but after a while everyone was lining up to give it a try. The course consisted of roping a calf(not real of course), some basketball free throws, pushing a weighted wheel barrow and bobbing for apples...which was everyone's favorite part! People of all ages participated and were very, very competitive. Congratulations to all youth competing this week. Special Congrats to Anika Hodgson and Krymsun Jack Too who were the All Around Champion Novice Youth, and also to Sarah Connors and Ripple My Zziple who won the All Around Champion Youth. Looking forward to seeing everyone again at the Summer Sizzler in July! Good luck going out to all the MQHYA Youth travelling to Skowhegan, Maine this coming weekend for the MeQHA Firecracker Circuit, and following that is the AQHA Region 6 Experience.
June 11th The Equine Review was a great success for everyone! Whether it was our beautiful booth, delicious bake sale or stylish fashion show all of our youth had a great day working at the booth and see everything there was to see! Huge Thanks to The Cowboy Way for donating all of the clothes into our fashion show! We never would've pulled it off without you! Hopefully we encouraged some new members to join our association! June is now here, so hopefully everyone is getting all packed and practiced up for the Highland Classic. Looking forward to seeing everyone and their horses again!
April 22nd Well it's time again for the annual Equine Review! Since we're going to make the Fashion show awesome this year we're going to need all the help we can get. We need approximately 8-10 models, anyone who is interested should contact either Elyssa, Myself or Shonda about your sizes as soon as possible! We're also going to need volunteers to come Friday night to help decorate the booth and make decorations for the booth. This year in the booth we're going to be selling Tim Horton's coffee and hot popcorn all weekend long for everyone! We're also going to be selling baked goods so we'll need anyone who can to please bring some yummy cookies, fudge or anything would be great! There will also be a used Clothing and Tack booth, so any youth are free to bring anything to put in that and also if anyone is interested working there! And Saturday night after the fashion show the MQHYA will be holding a meeting for all youth members who are interested. It's going to be a great weekend! Hopefully the weather will be great:) Can't wait to see everyone.
April 1st We're all a little tired but we're home safe and sound from our trip to Boxborough, Massachusetts to the Rehion 6 Conference! Myself, Elyssa, Brittany and our youth director and advisor Shonda and Christa all drove down in one car! It was such a fun time! We met lots of great new people, enjoyed quite a few very informative seminars, enjoyed great meals and a fun banquet that Saturday evening. Not to forget stopping to do a little shopping on the drive on the way down and back! It was quite a long drive for all of us ranging from about 10-13 hours of driving! While there we attended some great seminars about horse conformation, youth scholarships, the perfect horse show makeup and the Professional Horseman's panel. We were sad to leave but knew we had a long drive back home, not to mention school the next day! We all can't wait to go back next year!
March 22nd Well I've just gotten back from the MQHYA Youth Weekend in Moncton, New Brunswick. What a great opportunity it was to get a good number of our youth back together before the show season, to discuss some of the upcoming activities and have a little fun while we're at it. We started the weekend off by having a meeting with all our youth deciding on the youth activities for the fast approaching show season. We discussed topics such as the Equine review booth with the used tack sale and annual fashion show, which will be better then ever this year! At our three shows this summer we're going to be holding such activities as a Youth vs. Amateur baseball game, a Drag Queen Showmanship, Sit-A-Buck and an exciting obstacle course. During the day we went to Crystal Palace and had fun on the amusement park rides, sat in Starbucks and read, had pizza and later after going on a few more rides we went to the movies! Everyone loved catching up and obviously had a great time. Next weekend Elyssa, Brittany and I are traveling to the Region 6 Regional Conference in Massachusetts which we're looking forward to!
January 25th This Saturday the MQHYA set up a booth at the Fredericton Exhibit Center in Fredericton New Brunswick at the January Thaw Equine Expo! Thanks to the youth members who attended it was definetly an enjoyable day for everyone. There were a great number of spectators and hopefully we've encouraged some new riders to become members. We held a short meeting around lunch with our youth adviser, Shonda, to discuss some of the upcoming activities the youth will be putting on during our 2009 season. Looks like it's going to be a great year! We have the YLC Conference in March held in Massachusetts, and then our Youth weekend in April! And keep watch out for tickets as they become available on a Kippy Belt and Cruel Girl Jacket!
November 8thThis past weekend the MQHA held the Annual Awards Banquet and General Meeting. On the morning of November 8th, the new MQHYA Board of Officers and Directors was chosen. Congratulations to our new President Elyssa Lewis, 1st Vice President Brittany Watts, 2nd Vice President Jenna Hughes and Secretary Sarah Connors. Also we'd like to welcome old and new members to the Board of Directors, Fiona Cunningham, Jenny Cunningham, Robyn-Lynn Cypher, Jenny Fowler and Katurah Fowler. We'd also like to welcome our Youth Director, MQHA President Shonda Wilson and Rhonda Hulan. Many plans and activities were discussed during the meeting for the 2009 Show Season and it sounds like it's going to be an awesome year! The Banquet took place that following evening, with a wonderful dinner, Year-end awards, the annual auction run by Wally McNutt and then shortly after the dance took place until well into the morning! It was surely a great weekend for all that attended!

September 21stCongratulations to Courtney Favreau of Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire on her horse Only Flashed, who were the winners under both judges of the 2009 MQHA Novice/Youth Mini Slot Class and of the grand prize of $2500. Congratulations to the reserve champion Miranda Cummings on Belles Last Dance of Fredericton, New Brunswick. Seven of the top youth riders and their horses from the Maritimes and New England competed in the Mini Slot making it a great class for the large crowd of spectators who attended! It was followed by the $7500 2 YO Mega Slot class, the winner of that class was Troy Green aboard OHK Mr Krymsun, a maritime bred horse owned by Darren Boswell of Charlottetown, PE. The weather couldn't have been much worse for the weekend but that didn't stop everyone from coming out and showing to their best. Congratulations to Novice Youth All Around Anika Hodgeson and her horse OHK Invested Krymsun, and Youth All Around Sarah Connors with Ripple My Zziple. Job well done to everyone who competed this past weekend. It's always sad to see the MQHA Season come to an end but we look forward to seeing everyone in November for the Annual MQHA General Meeting & Awards Banquetin Amherst, Nova Scotia. We'd also like to wish all MQHA members competing at the All American Quarter Horse Congress in Ohio, the best of luck next month!
